Two-day Conference on GEOMETRY AND MECHANICS
14-15 June 2006
The Department of Mathematics" at the University of Surrey will be awarding an Honorary Doctorate to Professor J.E. Marsden FRS from the California Insitute of Technology in the June graduation ceremony this year which takes place on 16 June. In honour of this occasion a conference is being organised on the theme of "Geometry and Mechanics".Principal speakers at the conference will be

The conference venue
The conference will take place on the second floor of the School of Management building. A .pdf version of the campus map shows the location of Building AA which houses the Department of Mathematics, and due north of Building AA is the School of Management Building. Conference Banquet
The conference banquet will take place in the Oak Suite on Wednesday evening 14 June starting at 8pm. The cost of attending the conference banquet is £ 15 (includes wine and service), payable in addition to the registration fee. Registration for the banquet will close on Friday 9th June. Attendees wishing to register for the banquet after 9 June will have to pay the full cost of £ 35 !
Menu
- Starter: Warm field mushrooms filled with brie and pancetta on a bed of dressed watercress and topped with toasted pine nuts.
- Main: Pan-fried breast of chicken with a light chardonnay sauce garnished with fresh asparagus, croquette potatoes and buttered French beans.
- Vegetarian Main: Grilled goats cheese and roasted Mediterranean vegetables served on a bed of dressed salad leaves with black olives and vine-ripened cherry tomatoes.
- Wines: Cave de Massé soft red, and Cave de Massé dry white.
- Dessert: Assiette of desserts (mango and lime cheesecake, chocolate truffle torte, raspberry charlotte served with a selection of coulis and fresh fruit).

- For overnight accomodation, the Guildford YMCA is recommended. It is within walking distance of both the University and the city centre.
